No man is an island, entire of itself;

every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,

as well as if a promontory were,

as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:

any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind,

and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee. - John Donne, English poet

We do not need an emergency rule unless we are still living in 1969. Those days are over. Majlis Gerakan Negara (MAGERAN) is history. This is a time for the natural state of things to unfold. A time to let a hundred flowers bloom. The semiotics of structural violence must not be paraded in front of Malaysians who now know how to protest peacefully.

They know what a totalitarian regime means. They now know what separation of powers means. They want to see an urgent evolution of this philosophy. Only those in danger of losing power want to maintain hegemony and will use the ideological state apparatuses to maintain power. Machiavellians included.

Emergency rules are for nations in desperation. For dictators facing an imminent and violent political death. For despots who refuse to detach themselves from power. For governments that allow prime ministers to rule for as long as they like. Ours is not. We do not have dictators. We have democracy yearning to break free.

Suharto, Idi Amin, Shah Reza Pahlavi, Somoza, Noriega, and Marcos were are all tyrants. Some fell from grace because of the greed of their women. Typical Marie Antoinette syndrome.

Police must maintain justice

We are evolving into a civil society in which civilians are beginning to speak up in the name of building our own civilisation from the possibilities of social and global justice, universal human rights, cosmopolitanism, and radical multiculturalism. A deployment of the army will kill this image of a civil society, right at its infancy.

Soldiers fight to protect external enemies of the people, not to protect corrupt politicians against their own people. The latter is philosophically wrong.

The police are supposed to be maintaining justice in a world of irrationalities and unjust behaviour. The police need no extra protection if they are true to their conscience and always available and reliable to protect the citizens, even against elected representatives who abuse power.

An image of the army on the streets will be a violent one - both in truth and perception. We need not go that route - the route of Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Uganda, or Burma. We are gentle people with gentle ways of dealing with conflicts. We are not a junta nation. We do not have Hutus and Tutsis.

A gentle people

Gently done, we know when to remove a regime that is no longer gentle to the people who voted it into power. Gently, the Internet will take its natural course in igniting mental revolutions first, and peaceful revolutions next. Gently done, we know how to protest loudly against the violent and sudden price hikes, massive corruption, death of the judiciary, and even unsolved murder mysteries.

We do not need the army on the streets. We need to instead arm ourselves with revolutionary ideals, to hold on fast to our dreams of a republic of virtue, and to use the Internet to voice our dissenting views and to engineer regime change.

We are already an army of intellectuals in our own way, patrolling the mindscapes of Malaysia, spreading the message of peace, policing against politicians that are corrupt to the core. We are an army and a police ourselves. We do not need the semiotics of violence to take root.

Malaysians are gentle people. Only the media is getting more and more violent, feeding our children with stories upon stories of sex, lies, murders, and political intrigues.

Forgotten, unheard stories

We have forgotten the more important news of the day: the rakyat suffering through the recession and possible depression, youth losing their moral compass, failing schools, sprawling urban poverty, continuing systematic spread of racist propaganda in schools and universities, breakdown of family values, siphoning of the nation's wealth out of the country, declining standards of our universities and a plethora of other issues we should be addressing and finding solutions to.

And many more. Stories of the rakyat. These are the masses whose stories must be heard. These are not the elite whose stories are pushed daily to the forefront, shoved into our consciousness ad nauseum.

No, the army must stay home and meditate or at best be deployed as peacekeeping forces for the United Nations. The people must be trusted to express themselves freely, peacefully.

Malaysian rallies are becoming huge family events. People come in all shape and sizes, from all walks of life, from a hard days' work to listen to music and their favourite revolutionary leaders, and to renew their commitment to regime change.

The people are armed with better knowledge of what will work for them as Malaysians and what has miserably failed. They want change because the only permanent thing in this world is change.

No, we do not need the army patrolling the streets. The family members of the army and the police are also suffering from the recession and the astronomical increase in the price of everything. They too are armed with the knowledge of why the country is messed up as a result of the messing up of global and local politics.

For whom the bell tolls

In the end, the bell tolls for thee. When the time comes for the truth to surface, no army can stop it from violently appearing from the ground beneath. No police can guard truth from appearing in the eyes of the public.

No army can defeat revolutionary forces that install better regimes through peaceful, silent, ethical and intelligent means. No iron bars can imprison the conscience and the yearn for one to speak the truth to power. The goodness in men and women will be the best police and the best army.

Man is born free yet everywhere he is in chains.

No army on our streets, please. We are Malaysians. We must let justice take it natural course.

An interesting observation one can make when linking the regimes of these dictators: the role of the police. They can either pave the way for dictatorship to continue or they can end it.

Notice that in Manila, Bangkok and Jakarta, it was the police who stepped aside to make way for the people to express their anger at Marcos, Thaksin and Suharto respectively.

Also notice that throughout Malaysia, it is the police who make it possible for power abuse and corruption to exist uninterrupted for the last 26 years. Not even the rulers and the king have the power to stop them.

When someone said you can get away with murder, that person must certainly have the Malaysian police in mind!!

dear dr. azly,

i have always find your (blog) writing at bit verbose and mayhaps a tad too grandiloquent. not all bloggers, surfers, lurkers and readers:
1. have long attention span (me included, depending on mood and work load).
2. understands big words and still keep with the flow of your thinking.
that is why despite being an avid reader of malaysia-today, i mostly skip your blog.
however, your article above is just nicely simple and punchy enough to put forward your thesis.
thank you for enlightening my saturday morning.

The Police personnel consist primarily of very lowly educated individuals out to seek their own fortune through corruption. They are extremely good in provocating fear upon the public and treat the UMNO dogs like their master.

They are a disgrace to the nation. Totally unfit to uphold law and order.

Why is the army used by our corrupt government used to threaten its own gentle citizens?
Army is supposed to fight our enemies esp. from other country.
We don't need such a huge number of personnels in our army because we don't have enemies as our country is friendly to other countries!
We don't need to equip our army with all the expensive submarines and airjets bought from other countries (with extra commisions to be paid to certain individuals)!
A small country like ours doesn't need heavy arms!
The army should stoll with the 'rakyat' on this peaceful land!

Malaysia, like many oil producing countries are suffering the full brunt of oil curse !!

THe evil UMNO politicians will not relinguish power peacefully. RM 61 Billion per year is too compelling. The evil people will resort to any measure to stay in power.

It is almost certain that sooner or later , the army will be involved. And it will only be the army that will either rescue our country or drag our country deeper into the darkest age!!

I pray that there will be enough morally strong, righteous, honourable army officers who one day, when called upon, will discharge their God mandated duties and obligation to protect the country and the Rakyat !!

The army should be professional and be loyal to the duly elected government of the day…..but on the other hand they have a duty to the people first through this duly elected government…..the key word is duly elected……

When events such as crumbling army buildings, guns that misfire, second hand submarines that may sink or helicopters crashing come into the picture…..it means only one thing……the country is without security and any national threat may entail loss of the nation…in situations of this nature ….the army must act in telling off the duly elected government to buck up or else……...

In the movie Gladiator, the army remains loyal to the King, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, despite all his decadent activities that imperil the Roman state. In the final scene during the duel to death between their previous commander, General Maximus Decimus Meridius and the Emperor, they still remain loyal to the King despite the Emperor’s evil antics to ensure the death of the General. However when the Emperor looses his sword, and orders the Praetorian guards to hand him a sword, their commander and prefect Quintus tells the guards to stand down…..the stunned Emperor , now on his own is killed by Maximus.

The army need not take sides. It only must ensure that the playing field remains level so that good always is a step ahead of evil….

Skip it if you must when it's too much for you

YES, all Malaysians agree that the army should be in barracks & in army-camps at all times unless & until external factors threaten the security of our nation. They have no reason to be on the streets during times of peace.
We must not allow interference from the army like as happened in the Philippines, Pakistan, Thailand, Burma ect.
After tasting power through military rule, generals might get the notion that power can be achieced more easily & quickly through military take-overs than through the legal democratic process.

It is patently obvious that there are 2 powerful camps in the Barisan Najis Govt. who want to deny DSAI his wish and they are Bodohwi & SIL, with the SIL orchestrating most of his strategies, and Najis & Ros-p*ki-mah with the Army (Najis is the Minister of Defence), IGP & A-G behind him.

It seems the Army wants Najis up there after Bodohwi. There are 2 tasks for DSAI and Pakatan. One, is to unseat Bodohwi, and the second is to remove the Najis camp threat which is all too real (with the IGP calling for joint exercises with the military and saying that the military might come in if things get too unruly is a threat.

If Najis and Bodohwi cannot run the country effectively, they should let others who can do it much better run Malaysia.

We have to watch their every move closely and be ready to do whatever is necessary to stop Malaysia descending into chaos where everyone will be the loser.

All officers in the Armed Forces of Malaysia receive their commissions from the Yang Di Pertuan Agong. Therefore their loyalty is to the King and the Sultans. They, in turn, are bound to look after the rakyat, especially if the tenets of Islam are to be applied. Therefore there is NO reason why serving officers should express any loyalty to the government of the day. And more especially, they should NOT have ANYTHING to do with the PDRM.

In times of civil unrest, the army is trained to take over control from the police. If diplomatic coaxing does not work then its 'thru the barrel of the gun' resort.
There had been instances, where army boys had clashed with police in the past. During the influx of illegal indonesian boat people, the police had a profiteering time robbing arrested indons and then releasing them. The poor devils eventually ended up in the army catch net. The army commanders realised something not right and caught the police red handed with their catch and release tactic. The army gave them a bash for it.
True the army is loyal to the King and sultans but believe me, the UMNO devils are masters when it comes to dirty games. Why do you think the country is so badly managed? Its cos these devils spent their days doing everything except running the country

Mary Antoinette indeed doc - the analogy most apt for a woman who shall remain unnamed riding high amidst the crust of the city's finest.

For sure many share your concerns but the many instuments, institutions to govern the nation has been fully politicised/hijacked, only to have the public held at ransom and there's no sign of it letting up just yet till the next mandate - but fight on we must for there is always the possibility of self implosion any given time.

Fine words but idealistic.

When their backs are against the wall, they will make their last stand to defend their inetersts and that is when with whom the army strolls is important.

See a similar situation in Nepal, where the minority bourgeois elite are trying to block the Maoists becoming the government, despite popular support.

I wanted to stop listing rumors I collected from various sources, because I don’t want to be called “hidung tak mancung, pipi tersorong-sorong”. But it seems many have ask me openly not to stop. In fact they want me to continue writing without hitch.

So here I go:

1.0 Recent polling numbers has shown that more than 90% do not believe that Anwar is a sodomizer, to a varying degree. Despite all that is done, the people who believed in Anwar being a sodomizer are limited to UMNO stalwarts.

2.0 In desperation, they started to challenge Anwar to conduct “swearing” or “sumpah” to prove his innocence. We even have people like Abdul Aziz, head of Putera UMNO, making such call to Anwar. If I were Abdul Aziz, I’d make a “sumpah” to prove that his “American” degree is genuine, first. We have been informed that the college he claimed to have graduated from is non-existent.

3.0 But, the fact that Anwar Ibrahim filed his case in the Shariah Court, is an effective counter-measure to the recent UMNO move. This is because, Anwar is not oblige, in Islamic jurisprudence, to make the oath of innocence.

4.0 In Islamic jurisprudence, it is the accuser that must swear first, Anwar, will only swear his DENIAL, to the accusation. Anwar Ibrahim is not required to make an oath at this point, until Saiful makes his oath first.

5.0 The call for Anwar to make “oath of innocence” is actually a desperate move by UMNO to smear Anwar more

6.0 I also heard that Ezam and friends had to cancel their public announcement. They originally wanted to come out saying they knew of Anwar’s homosexual activities for a long time. They also wanted to say that they left KeAdilan after learning of this fact. But, since the Malays acceptance of Anwar’s guilt is at an all time low, they figuresd their admittance will not add any value. Besides, they have no credibility anymore since they are going back on their words.

7.0 There are talks that this is a Pak Lah/Khairy conspiracy since the recent Anwar/Najib “scandal” is potentially lethal to both Anwar and Najib. Their removal will result in Pak Lah staying in power for a much longer period.

8.0 But, my other source tells me that it is the handiwork of Najib Tun Razak, since at the end of the day, it is Pak Lah who will have to decide whether Anwar is to be indicted or not. Why? The AG reports to the PM department and the final decision rests in the hand of PM.

if !supportLists]-->9.0 Army involvement in Najib/Anwar Saga: The Military Intelligence (MIO) is now 100% behind Najib and will do everything to ensure Najib is protected and becomes Prime Minister

10.0 In the last 10 years, Najib has managed to win the hearts of so many generals in the army. And it seems the Army’s allegiance now is to Najib Tun Razak. The Sultans have only nominal influence on the Army.

11.0 The view among the Generals now is that Anwar is no longer an option because he is seen to be too liberal. They believe that Anwar in power will put the Malay’s interest in this country in jeapaordy.

12.0 This is also bad news for Khairy/Pak Lah because the Mahathir’s claim that Pak Lah is a Singapore agent seems to go down well with the Army. They view Paklah and Khairy as Singapore agents.

13.0 The Army will do anything to uphold the sovereignity of the Malays and the Malays Sultans and Islam. Any candidates or party seen to contradict this stand, will not be tolerated by the Army.

14.0 As of now, the MIO is working overtime to clear Najib from the Altantunya rap. I was told that Bala is actually kidnapped by the MIO (but am not sure). And that, the MIO is now actively advancing Najib's political career. They are now wiping out any evidence linking Najib to Altantunya.

15.0 They are also fighting every effort to smear Najib. This also means that the MIO is gunning on Raja Petra. It’s also funny because Raja Petra’s house is not very far from the MIO base in Sungai Buloh.

16.0 The MIO is already instrumental in building Najib’s popularity among UMNO rank and file. Even now, Najib is getting standing ovations whenever he goes to visit UMNO Bahagian or Negeri. It seems that MIO, among all, has done a good job in building Najib’s internal popularity.

17.0 Businessmen, whom has benefited from Najib’s MINDEF contracts are also bank-rolling Najib’s campaign. And they are geared towards making Najib Prime Minister.

18.0 Anwar will have a hard time in his effort to become Prime Minister. The last time Anwar was smeared and lied upon, the Army chose to be neutral. This time around, both the Army and Police are working against Anwar Ibrahim.

19.0 In fact, the Police and MIO are busy creating a strong case to permanently destroy Anwar’s credibility. Luckily, all that is collected against Anwar so far has been circumstantial. So far, there has been no direct evidence proving Anwar has committed act of sodomy.

20.0 However, the circumstantial evidence may not be effective in courts of law, but it is may be effective in the court of public opinion. A court trial may not get Anwar incarcerated, but it might scar Anwar’s image among certain segment of the voters. It might prove sufficient for UMNO/BN in the coming General Election.

Let me remind the readers again, that these are rumors I picked up from various sources. It might not be proven correct. So, I leave it to my readers discretion to decide it’s authenticity.
