We must congratulate the present leadership of Selangor for suggesting that Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) be open to non-Bumiputeras; a good suggestion indeed and UiTM students and alumni should in fact be proud that such a statement of hope and reconciliation is made public.
More than merely ten percent should be allocated for Malaysians of other ethnic groups. This is indeed and excellent way to begin restructuring our public universities so that they can become truly global and embrace multiculturalism as a pillar of intellectual pride.
This will be in tune with the spirit of the The Beijing 2008 Olympics in which there will be competition amongst the races. Way too long the Malay students in UiTM have been unfairly denied the opportunity to collaborate and cooperate with their peers from other ethnic groups in the learning process. They have been shackled in a place wherein the only ideology they know is one of "Ketuanan Melayu"; a concept that is a contradiction to what a university must aspire to become. The 3-4 years of their wonderful college experience should provide them the skills to work in a multicultural environment.
Many "Bumiputra-centric" institutions have opened up to non-Bumputras in order for us see a reflection of Malaysian-ness in diversity. Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, and Maktab Rendah Sains MARA are examples. There is no need for the administrators and students of UiTM to be upset over such a proposal.
Restructure leadership first
But a larger issue is we must first begin restructuring the leadership of all our universities to reflect our desire for Malaysians to be truly Malaysian, "truly Asian" as the slogan goes.We must begin by closely reading the philosophy and principles of affirmative action and translate these into practice and to monitor its successes.
Let us do a better job with our policies of diversity and affirmative action in order to find a peaceful solution to the dead-end issues of quota, meritocracy, dread, mundaneness, blind nationalism, cemented racism, closing of doors to the best and the brightest, and a spectrum of malaise in our public universities. Our vice-chancellors must enculturalise what is good, new, and true that they have learned from their alma mater in foreign lands, so that they can govern institutions with purity of thought. Most of them are US, UK, and Australian-trained and well-versed in the issue of diversity and affirmative action.
The problem is that many get afflicted by philosophical amnesia as soon as we are back in Malaysia after many years of studying abroad and learning about what worked in advanced countries. We let 'this old house we inhabit' define the culture that will intellectually disable us. The University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in the US proclaimed its commitment to diversity in a statement issued on Sept 20, 1999:
"At UCLA, a public university located in one of the most heterogeneous regions in the world, diversity is an indispensable element of academic excellence. We are fundamentally committed to including and integrating within the campus community individuals from different groups as defined by such characteristics as race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic background, religion, sexual orientation, age, disability, and intellectual outlook.
"This commitment requires efforts to attract to the campus members of historically under-represented racial and ethnic groups. However, to create a rich academic experience and intellectual and cultural environment for everyone, we extend our concern beyond representation to genuine participation. Our commitment to diversity entails devising strategies and programmes to realise its benefits fully in education, research and service. This commitment inevitably means an openness to change - indeed, to transformation."
Einstein once said that we cannot solve problems from the same plane on which the problem was created. We would be going around in circles, looking for the door to equality, justice and wisdom in our collective hope of creating a nation of peace-loving Malaysians. The New Economic Policy and the problem of race in governance of our universities must be framed within the Einsteinian maxim.
Need for multi-cultural audit
Many would like to see a diverse team of top leadership in our public universities. Chinese, Indian, Iban or Kadazan Malaysian students would like to see a vice-chancellor or a deputy vice-chancellor of their ethnicity. Our foreign students are not lured here to learn more sophisticated political-economic forms of racism.
A multi-cultural mix of top leadership will ensure a good sense of student belonging to the university and will show the world that not Malaysia will not only has a 'world-class' image but also practises a 'world-wise' educational policy. Universiti Teknologi MARA, in this case, can be made less Malay and more multi-cultural, so that we may teach students to view success not solely in racial terms but through a transcultural lens. This university will benefit intellectually and culturally from a good composition of multi-cultural leadership. A multi-cultural university senate may help ease the migraine of the quota mentality and will educate the top leadership on the need to evolve wisely thorough good affirmative action policies that are also in line with the teachings of the great religious traditions and humanistic educational philosophies.
Islam, Christianity, Catholicism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and even atheism teach us to look at human beings not through the eyes of race alone. A good system will look at class as a basis of creating a just system that brings out humanism in all of us. The concept of democracy in education demands us to integrate all the diverse cultures so that each may learn to better respect, and next, help each other build better a vision of an ethical society.
Create a new varsity order
Borrowing the words of the American social reconstructionist George Counts, who wrote of the need to reconstruct society through education, I propose that we seriously engage in a national dialogue on the beauty of diversity in our public universities. It will be a guarantee that whatever we have set up as a multi-cultural nation will be achieved if we begin with this vision from the top of the ivory tower.
If we let the higher education minister restructure the culture and nature of who should constitute the leaders in the ivory towers, we will see discrimination being properly addressed and resolved. This may be painful in the beginning and the healing process will not be pleasant, but heal we all must. An all-Malay, all-Chinese or all-Indian educational institution will not educate well but will indoctrinate excellently.
Education in the broadest sense of the word should train people to become transcultural citizens able to build a strong foundation of radical multi-culturalism so that society will continue to be critical of governments that lie to their own people through policies that give new meaning to the colonialist policy of divide, conquer and rule.
How much have our universities progressed in the area of cross-cultural understanding? To what extent will our graduates be colour-blind in their work for national development and ultimately, for human liberation? How much do the universities perpetuate ethnocentrism through their hidden curriculum of excluding each other based on race matters? The 22-year policy of the previous administration has reached its ideological shelf-life.
The universities, especially UiTM need to evolve beyond the paradigm of blind nationalism which has never been healthy for this nation. We need the 'sensor-fused' technology of eliminating the vestiges of hyper-addictive neo-feudalistic educational pill we have been made to swallow en masse. We need to radically reconstruct the composition of our university leaders to put a stop to this conveyor belt of disabling and paralysing strategy of social reproduction.
Truly diverse administration
Monthly university senate meetings would be more vibrant if we choose to create a culture that will celebrate the diverse perspective that addresses the issue of class, the marginalised, and the criminalisation of the best and the brightest students. We may even discuss how to apply cutting-edge strategies to meet the diverse needs and intelligence of students. We will learn to become less suspicious of our ill-derived and acquired ultra-nationalistic sentiment. Our senate room will be a beautiful forum and may also in decades to come evolve somewhat like the "Conference of the Birds", as the great Sufi Master Sheikh Fariduddin Attar would call it. In it, we will see the faculty seeking wisdom and truth rather than arguing their biases using politically-correct academic jargon.
We will see a beautiful senatorial culture in all universities. The common goal would be to celebrate humanism, not to dehumanise students and faculty through discriminatory policies. We will gradually free ourselves from the shackles of shallow politicking that has plagued our universities ever since Independence.
All voices will be heard and the voices of social justice and intellectual freedom will be the most celebrated. We can become like America and its insistence on diversity in its universities. Walk into a good American university and you will see a diverse faculty - white, black, Hispanic, Asian and Pacific Islander - all appointed on merit.
We can embrace such multi-culturalism and trumpet to the world how we truly value diversity. This will add more meaning to the idea of a truly world-class Malaysian university. Our university senators will spend more time discussing the philosophical and transcultural foundations of university education, rather than argue tediously over this or that quota and then go home scheming against one another and using their intelligence for less noble purposes.
UiTM will do even better
Let the rakyat insist on the diverse composition of our university leadership. Let us see which Malaysian university will embrace this idea of projecting a 'world-class' and 'world-wise' university. After all, aren't we supposed to be a world model in racial harmony? Let us then quickly put an end to racial segregation in our ivory towers.
Let UiTM pave the way to not only prove that change is not only pleasurable, but also inevitable. As an educator who also had the excellent opportunity to be part of UiTM first as a student and part-time faculty albeit briefly in both instances ages ago, I truly believe that Malay students will be all the more enriched with all the races pursuing knowledge not necessarily to compete with one another, but to collaborate in the spirit of diversity and multiculturalism.
For too long UiTM has been dubbed a "universiti untuk Melayu sahaja" (a university for Malays only). It is time to create a new image. From an educational philosophy and psychology point of view, the current image is a misrepresentation. Ultimately it is the students themselves that will continue to be shortchanged. This is a form of oppression and structural violence on the Malay mind; especially when these same bright young minds are also subjected to mind-controlling programs such those created by The Biro Tata Negara and shoved into the brains of the participants. Who benefits from all these?http://azlyrahman-illuminations.blogspot.com/2008/02/155-malay-view-of-ketuanan-melayu.html
To UiTM alumni and faculty of whom are my best of friends and colleagues, do enlighten the students with the fact that to succeed in this globalized world of opportunities, one must embrace positive change and be pragmatic about shifting circumstances. Our job is to suggest the best for the leaders of the future. We cannot settle for anything less for the bright, young minds called Malaysians. We must create a robust multicultural environment to affect positive changes for us and our students.
To UiTM students known to be creative, street-smart, and good problem-solvers, there is a bigger world outside of UiTM that awaits those who are world-wise. If education is a gentle profession that promises progress and prosperity, you will not be victimized in your never-ending journey for knowledge and wisdom. Demand your university to provide you with a multicultural environment in order to have a better and rewarding university experience. Challenge yourself to be highly proficient not only in English but in Bahasa Malaysia and other languages. You do not live in a cocoon. You are not to be blamed for the environment created for you; one created for political reasons that no longer have the appeal nor the educational logic.
Universities the world over are taking pride in how multicultural and global their campuses are, making sure that diversity and affirmative action becomes the culture. In the United States, parents want to send their sons and daughters to colleges that have a truly diverse population. The key word is "global education and international experience".
Universiti Teknologi MARA will have a brighter future with this new vision of multiculturalism.
Good luck in your Olympics of the mind, body, and spirit. My best wishes goes to the students of UiTM who are missing a major component of their college experience.
To help the Malays, set them free. This is the first ray of light for the dawn of this new era.

Dr,
Fortunately you are in America or else the VC of UiTM and 5,000 students will be at your door step tonight shouting like men possessed.
No Sir, there is no way they will want to be 'free'. They will decline as a people with shacked brains.
I suggest UiTM introduce a Faculty of Mat Rempitism. The VC is well qualified to prepare its curriculum.
Do you think you can find a VC like him in any other part of the world?

They don't want to be free, they want to be comfortable in their "tempurung". Or probably they are afraid to let others know what their curriculum is all about. Ya, maybe they're teaching them to hate other races!
Pathetic!

i am sorry to say that you have wasted your time in writing this logical and common sense article. Malaysian govt dont rule with logic and common sense. read the newspapers, watch the reaction of certain group of malays and you will see this.
the mind set will not change because as humans when you have no potentail of progressing you tend to cling to what you have. when you see behaviour like this where certain people cling to their ketuanan melayu right, you know there is no more hope for them

Dr Azly,
People like you should be running our institutions of higher learning. And I am saying that not because of your kulitfications or being a Bumi, but because you have been very consistent and clear in your thoughts as to what we Malaysians really need ..... as Malaysians.
But alas, too many of you guys are off somewhere else, and we are left to contend with half-baked leaders.
MARA used to send many students to further their studies overseas. Almost everyone of them gets to go, I presume, because I used to be attached to a placement company which arranged for the students' admission into colleges overseas. Among the colleges that they are approved to attend are the University of Toledo, Western Michigan, Kalamazoo (a Malaysian kampung), Louisiana State, Baton Rouge, etc. But one college stands out, as it was quite surprising that the students were willing to go, and MARA or JPA approved their scholarships for entry to ......... Christian Brothers College, a Catholic university run by the La Salle Brothers. Hey, the students have no problems with that, and the university had no problems with that too. I did not keep in touch with the students so I do not know how they turn out. Maybe some of them are readers here.
Does that mean that our older generation of Malay brothers are much more tolerant and open-minded? But then again, I look at our current political leaders, I see the same age group or older. So, it cannot be a simple generational thing. It's the individual that has to adapt and change. Don't let the close-minded racist leaders lead you blindly.

Judging from the emotive outburst from the narrow-minded UiTM supporters, Tan Sri Khalid's proposal will not fly. This is further evidence that despite the efforts of Pakatan many segments of the population dare not get out from under the "tempurung". Is it an issue of confidence? http://ctchoolaw.blogspot.com/

This is not going to happen under UMNO. If a new PR government is to do it, the opposition UMNO will stiar shit and say that Malay rights are being eroded. We have to let them be.
I wonder what the reaction would be if the non-Malays had a university which is totally closed to the Malays?

I remembered the first Minister of Higher Education saying proudly that he will never allow non-Malays into UiTM. As I have always written, ours is the only country in the world where the leaders of the ruling party can state proudly their racist and discriminatory policies.
And Dr. Azly, please forget about opening up UiTM to other races. This is something that is unthinkable to UMNO and the Malays. The Malays have been turned into racists by UMNO. And another reason is that the non-Malays have no interests in enroling into UiTM. They would prefer to enroll into Universities and colleges which have twinning arrangements with reputable overseas universities, and to which they can enroll into to obtain a prestigious degree which are accepted worldwide.
So people, just forget about MARA. Nobody(non-Malays) is interested.
Noy only UiTM, but even our other public universities are fast losing their worth. Non-Malays, if they can afford it, will not go there too.

For the record, It's not just the MNCs that dun like to hire UiTM grads. Very few private companies in Malaysia like to do so too. Reasons being
1. Can't speak English
2. Technically incompetent
3. Slow to learn
4. Very low standards
Opening up is actually to their advantage as it allows for UiTM to raise their standards. I believe Tan Sri Khalid's intentions are noble. unfortunately those he tries to help are just plain too dumb or blind. Let them be then.
There's a saying that goes, "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't force it to drink"
Let them rot. I know I'll NEVER hire incompetent staff for my organization as the very survival of the organization would be in jeopardy. M'sia isn't like developed nations where if u make a mistake in hiring someone, you can just dismiss that person in 24hours.

I do not know what this fuss is all about. Why demonstrate on a comment by the Selangor MB?? Why not ask the non-bumis whether they would apply to study at UITm if it opens its doors to non bumis. As far as I believe, non bumis rather apply to study in colleges where they could learn a skill which makes them marketable in the employment sector. They are not going to waste their time in an unhealthy environment of racial polarisation, inhibited social and intellctual development and where everybody wants to be a preacher but not practise what they preach.
UITm can open its doors or close its doors to the non bumis and it will not matter the least to them.So why all this fuss????

Dear UiTM students and UMNO, tell us where in the world can one find enrolment into universities restricted to one race only? Not in the top Universities in USA, Canada,England, France, Germany, China, Taiwan, India, Egypt, Japan, etc. etc. But surprise, surprise, you can find this in our top("elite") university, UiTM, in Malaysia!!
So, what sort of impression/training is our "elite" university giving to our master race? Teaching them that ketuanan and discrimination is the right path in life and is considered virtuous?
By the way, our master race talks so much about Islam, so I am asking, is discrimination permitted in Islam?

It's a moot point whether UiTM opens its doors to non-malays. As a parent, even I have to take on two jobs to finance my children education to a private college, I will never, NEVER send my children to MARA.
Many non-malays parents are also of the same opinion. No matter how poor, they will beg, steal or borrow to send their children to colleges other than the malay populated colleges. Its only those parents who lack of ambitions for their children send their children to such colleges because they hope their children will end up as a government servant.
My children can only spend 4 years of their lives in college and never pass this way again. Why should I subject them to 4 years of mediocrity in a college perceived by employers and many people to be sub-standard?
Even though it may be cheap studying in UiTM initially but the opportunity costs are costly - their minds are closed, their standards are sub par and once graduated it is difficult to gain employment or job advancement.
An university with only one race and, worst still, with one ketuanan melayu mind set, this can only lead to unhealthy inbreeding. Inbreeding with people of its own kind with one set mind and culture.
The unhealthy inbreeding traits are already inherent and apparent; you can be clearly see the blind protest of its students behaving like people possessed without the capability to analyse the pros and cons of opening up of the learning institution and think outside the box. The students are incapable of holding an intellectual discourse on the reasons why the Selangor MB proposes that UiTM be open to other races.
Instead their knee-jerk reaction is to protest and condemn!
It's only the politicians that encourages a closed learning system because it benefits them. Whereas intellectuals like Azly Rahman and experienced corporate leaders like the Selangor MB would encourage competition and an open learning system because it benefits the students.
The UiTM students are blind to who are really sincerely looking after their interests in the long run.

If there rest of the China population which is 1.24 billion and the rest of India population which is 900 million doing the same kind of discrimination ( in politics, education, profession and etc) to their minority Muslims, how you all will feel? What you all will say?
I appreciate if you all can answer this honestly and professionally. We all are not kind anymore so please THINK! THINK! THINK!

only Non-bumi whom their families which cannot afford to paid for a private college would opt for public University. The Standard of education had dropped so low because they cannot compete with what the private sector paid for talented people. The same go for our secondary school, no sensible people woudl opt for a job that paid so low and with no future for promotion (for Non-Bumi). That goes for all the public sector in Malaysia. Elsewhere in the world UITM's action will be called racist. In Malaysia, they choose to call it 'Ketuanan Melayu' - whatever that means. The UMNO/BN Govt will be trying to keep this racist fire burning if they can and will continue to breed this Malaysian type of Ku Klux Klan version.

A brand new era for Universiti Teknologi MARA?
Why should we change, we are very happy as we are
We are doing very well in the NEP scheme of things
We don’t want contaminations by Cina Kuis & Kelings
Now we have the best degrees that money can buy
We don’t have to study, government aids are on standby
The last thing we need is the dirty word “meritocracy’
To us this is just as bad as, if not worse than, sodomy
Down with anyone who proposes any change
Competition is bad, innovation deranged
If Allah don’t help us, UMNO certainly will
Our taxpayers can always be forced to pay the bill
We are happy to stay in our mental cocoon
Textbooks be damned, we have cartoons
Our leaders exemplify that education does not pay
Corruption & larceny are more profitable and semua-nya OK!

UTIM will gain by letting in Non Malays to compete and is it NOT the word UNIVERSITY coming from the word UNIVERSE?, We Malaysian have live in our little coconut shell for too long. The best student from UITM can only be JAGUH KAMPONG....WHY MEMALUKAN ? Let the minority in to compete, it is damn good for the UNIVERSITY and for all Malays. WANZAH1 pointed rightly on the the taxes paid by the minority but wrong in context. The minority have to WORK and COMPETE and many many many Malaysian minority are competing around the world in business and academia. Just think WHY.... NEP and the narrow minded policies did NOT help the Hassan, Abu Bakar or Ahmad who are honestly making a living as a fisherman, planter or even an honest civil servant (RPK think otherwise) but the handful of ANAK PERDANA, UMNO PUTERA. It has also make MALAYS dependent on handout. DR Azly is damn right and he is a real, "TOWERING MALAYS" so to speak, because he call a spade a spade.
I say well done to Dr Azly and many Malays who see the sickness of NEP as a wrong tool to raise the the MALAYS to become as competitive and anybody in world. Politic of race and religion and money is a dangerous mix, let isolate each and solve them with due consideration. An NEW ECONOMIC POLICY to give all disadvantaged MALAYSIAN a chance should be embraced. Denying opportunity of one race is like stealing.
Let Make MALAYS FIRST AMONGST EQUAL TO THE WORLD by eliminating the addiction to handout.

This will be in tune with the spirit of the The Beijing 2008 Olympics in which there will be competition amongst the races.
Hi Dr Azly,
You have got the Olympics backwards. It should be “there will be races amongst the competition”.
Likewise, the Selangor MB also got it backwards. By opening up MARA to other races, the non-Malays will be doing the university a huge huge favour, and not the other way round. MARA needs non-Malays much more than non-Malays need MARA. As things stand, non-Malays will not touch MARA with a ten-foot pole. Talk about making virtue out of necessity.

Ini Tanah Melayu. Orang Melayu mesti ada special right. Orang China dan India, kalau tak puas hati, balik Cina, india atau pergi Singapura atau pergi negara2 orang putih.
Kalau semua rakyat Msia orang Melayu / Islam, lagi baik.
Since Kadazan/Dusun/Dayak etc who are not Muslim are natives in East Msia and we can not ask them to return to Negara Kadazan/Dusun or pergi negara2 orang puteh, let's classify them as Bumi also.
And Bumi must have special rights...
Not only UiTM students mesti 100% Bumi.
1) Only Bumi allows to represent Msia in sport events like Olympic.
Buat apa kasi chance kepala pendatangs2 (babi?) compete in Olympic? Kasi chance ini kepala Bumi lah !
2) All school principals, Universities Chancelor, VC etc mest Bumi.
3) Semua GICs CEO mesti Bumi
4) Semua banks mesti majority own by Bumi.
5) Semua scholarship kasi Bumi..
Pembaca pembaca Melayu.... is this what is in your mind?

It's alright for all races to enrol into chinese schools but it's not alright the other way round as far as UiTM is concerned! That's not all, chinese and tamil schools are so seriously under funded they have to rely on the donations of businesses and individuals for survival. Why is this govt so unfair?
The proposed BN candidate for Permatang Pauh was once a student of one. This BN candidate even graduated from the Nanyang University of Singapore. It proves that Malays can be as good as anybody if they really wanted to but it won't happen under this govt.

Well Brain, you are not from Malaysia are you, if you are then you would not be able to see things so clearly, why you may ask ?
You see we Malaysia (all race and religion affiliation) are product of the NEP, this is the main cause of all these problem. It is very natural to develop hate when you have been oppress for years and it is very easy to pass this on to your children and they to theirs. So that is why I do not understand why any sane person would want to continue letting this hate being build up and build up, No one fear god anymore, the sad thing is we do not even fear for the future of our children, have we progress as humans ? Good to see that you have recovered from your short spell of "literary constipation" Dr. Azly ! That short piece some time ago was so terse and abrupt, it did not sound like you at all !!
Everyone who is enlightened, mature and progressive can see that the only way to lift Malaysian education out of the doldrums is to introduce diversity and meritocracy !!
Unfortunately, the VCs of these Institutions of Higher Learning (quickly getting lower by the day !!), and their proud students are firstly students of BIRO TATA NEGARA and secondly persist in their DELUSIONS of GRANDEUR in that they will be graduates of a University and "proves" that they are the cream of the "privileged" (Read "handicapped") bumiputra elite group set for life when they complete their studies !
All the while they have been fearful that if the other races were allowed into UiTM for e.g. the Malay students WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPETE and they won't look so good any more !! Are these students' and VCs brains so ADDLED & MENTALLY CHALLENGED that they know they will fall like ninepins to the open competition ??
Or is it that they KNOW in the bottom of their hearts that they DID NOT QUALIFY TO ENTER UiTM or any of the other Universities ON MERIT and therefore if UiTM ro the other UNIVERSITIES were to open up to the other races, they will be CANNON FODDER, LITERALLY !!
This is where education in Malaysia is coming to, Dr. and you are wise to remain in the USA, above and away from it all !!

It is only the bumis who are finding it so hard to compete and survive even with the playing field tilted 45 degress for them !! And we are supposed to "force open MARA so that we can do the bumis a favour and teach them all our hard-earned survival skills ??"
Go take a hike, Barisan Najis ! We wouldn't touch that cess pool called MARA with a 100 ft. pole. Education in the broadest sense of the word should train people to become transcultural citizens able to build a strong foundation of radical multi-culturalism so that society will continue to be critical of governments that lie to their own people through policies that give new meaning to the colonialist policy of divide, conquer and rule.
Just a simple philosophical differentiation. I personally do not believe that a person educated in multi-culturalism will endenger understanding. If we build our knowledge on top of our racial and religious prejudices than understanding will never be the result. The clever ones can even find clever reasons from their knowledge to justify their prejudices.
Educational process should, in my mind, not about reaching out into the world and to acquire all manner of knowledge and experiences. It is more an exploration of the inner space. Education came from the root word "educare" which basically means to "reveal". We are all conditioned by our environment and our parents. Education helps us go inwards to slowly "drop" those conditioning to reveal who we are really inside. As more of our conditioning are exposed and dropped we realised that we are humans - not asians, not chinese, not malays etc....only with such a mindset could there really be real communication , a communion of spirit. Could more knowledge lead us to more understanding ? I think not.
When I travel and met someone of a race I do not know I do not have any prejudgement and often we are able to talk and discuss and share our life and experiences mainly because I am secure with myself. On the other hand a person who had been conditioned and schooled in "ketuanan melayu" is insecure and will find it a very uncomfortable experience. Such insecurity comes from insularity.
To feel secure one has to be comfortable with oneself. To be comfortable with oneself there must be a sense of self-worth. Educational experiences in the right environment can provide that. Insular educational experiences will always leave a doubt as to one self-worth. The "ketuanan melayu" is nothing more than a political ploy in one instance and a mask we wear to fool others and ourselves with.

The word 'education' itself is vast in its meaning.
It is not merely the reading of academic books.
It is stepping out of the 'little' one room we are born in.
It is stepping into another/other room(s)
It is stepping into the fields, the meadows, the hills, the oceans...
It is to feel our smallness in our self-worth..
It is in the "BE" ...
Being within the 4 walls of a learning institution may help us to "BE". but only if we OPEN our minds... if not, it is merely going thru the motions.
From a politician's view - our education structure is a success, yes?

It is very obvious that UMNO has capitalised on this and organised demonstartions nationwide. It's so sad that UMNO is willing to sacrifice the young malays for their own narrow political agenda. If UMNO is sincere in wanting to develop intelligent, independent, confident, marketable, competitive malay youths, then they should be allowed to compete in the real world. By not allowing competition, UMNO is literally saying that the UITM students are not as good as that of, say, TAR college etc.
What this blow-up has done is to alieanate UITM graduates further in the job market. Can they all be absorbed into government agencies or GLC's? Definitely NO! Even CIMB prefers foreign graduates, and I'm sure many more GLC's would rather send a foreign graduate who can speak good English rather than a sputtering and shy UITM graduate to any foreign conference or seminar. There has always been the feeling amongst many malay graduates of UITM that they are discriminated when they work in a predomnantly non malay organistaion. With this, they will be "discriminated" further. In fact, they will not even be recruited, as non malay organisations will feel that a 'tit for tat' policy is appropritae since UITM is discriminating against the non malays.
UITM started as ITM, which took in students to do diploma courses. Many took the route after failing to do their form 6 or after not being able to get a place in universities. Over the years, it developed into a full fledged university and many of it's graduates have been sent overseas to further their studies. But it looks like many are still caught in a time warp and still feel that UITM is till the ITM of the past.

What is the benefit to the few non-Malays in getting admitted to UiTM? For that matter what is the benefit to Malays themselves?
Is there any chance that UiTM, with its tainted political leanings and patronage and racist inclinations, would ever be able to meet the need for a good, round and intellectually stimulating education and be able to produce socially mature and responsible citizens and in the process emerge as a world class university that is respected by one and all?
The nature of response put up by the existing students is most telling as to the environment they are shaped by, quality of education they are receiving and their ability to think critically. Perpetuating such institutions would only hasten the ultimate self-destructive path that the country seems to take particular pleasure in engaging. A lot of money and effort is wasted to produce just weed.
All this talk about 10% intake is much ado over nothing of value. Let the Malays have UiTM or even all of the public universities for themselves if they so desire.
In today's world, there are far superior educational opportunities found all over the world.

UITM is an ISLAND
Yes, it was and still is an island. I remembered it well. We were gathered all in one place..earth generation lost in space. I borrowed that phrase from Don Mclean but it aptly described UITM or ITM when I was there.
Is there anything wrong with UITM? Nope, the courses are good, the degrees are recognized all over the world, the lecturers mostly bright and come from all races, the cost to study there is cheap and yes…the girls, during my time they were the best looking compare to those dull and boring UM or UKM girls.
Were we afraid to compete with other races? Not in my Law school. We entered moot competition and fight the like of NUS of Singapore and UM and yes we were once a champion.
I always welcome other races to UITM…I have no problem with that..most other students dont have problems with that too…because we were together when in school the malays, chinese and indian. Why suddenly want to segregate us. Unless ofcourse you are part of the so call student movement like GPMS etc..
By the way you should know that there are Singaporean and Indonesian and also students from other countries studying there.
However ,UITM would leave you with one big problem and that is NETWORKING. You will be deprived of building your networking for 4-5 years with fellow Chinese and Indians students and that is not good for business or nation building once you’ve graduated. I straight away worked with a chinese senior lawyer and he offered me to be his partner. We the law graduates are more open and matured than students from other courses but what about other graduate from other courses? Most of them are so scared to enter the market..and this is the fault of UITM. UITM is to be blamed.

But come to think of it , most of the aristocrate malays i.e the rich Malays after sendig their children to MRSM would either send their children to the other universities or overseas and not to UITM. Therefore UITM was purely for the lesser malays so that the people who runs the UITM can manipulate the students . Look at the BN politicians they send their children overseas to learn , but not the lesser malays who have one track mind because the people who control them will be able to continue their agenda.. That is why they would not like outsiders in their institution as these outsiders can then show them the true meaning of education. and it would certainly destroy their process of brainwashing agenda..and in any institution of higher learning why do you not take the cream but still take in the dummies., because it is easier to control dummies.. If ever the dummies become westernize then they can voice their concern to their authorities, which the top would not like it to happened.. So if there are UITM grads out there who do no agree to this remark please comment, if you understand English, then you are not a true UITM grad as you would have agreed with the MB of Selangor. In understanding English and integration it has already broaden your mind when you came out to work. Why not let it happen before you came out to work, then it would have broad your intelligence much earlier, and job seeking will be easier. Even the chancellor and the vice-chancellor children will be studying overseas and not in UITM.. So this is all politics and not Ketuaran, because even being a malay you would think of sending your children to a better institution and not a dummy institution .

"To help the Malays, set them free. This is the first ray of light for the dawn of this new era".................
No! No! Never. We don't want change. Over our dead body.
We want to continue having subsidies, special privileges and those crutches... and everything that "Ketuanan" can offer and benefit us.
We want to be spoon-fed for another 50 years.
Not having to face challenges in life.
Forever and ever.
Malu? Sedikit tak apa.
