Dear readers,

I was emailed the letter below supposedly concerning a graduation message from a group of Universiti Malaya students. I hope you can verify if this message was delivered. I hope this is not what our students are advocating. In times of a national crisis we are going through these days, hope we will work together to educate ourselves on the importance of multiculturalism and the respect for each other, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, creed, and intellectual opinions. We will solve problems better through peaceful means.

I am also proposing a speech to the graduates, to replace any possible message of "ketuanan this or that". I think the idea of the superiority/dominance of this or that ethnic group is not only outdated by dangerous to the well-being of a multicultural country such as Malaysia. Let us all grow up.

Educate-- not aggravate. What our nation needs is an educational philosophy and system that promotes equity, equality, excellence, and empathy for the children of all races.

The email to me goes as follow:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a letter from University Malaya's head of graduates to all the students (maybe of a certain race only).

Here it is below! For those not bothered in stressing your brains too much in understanding the written malay, I'll do the translation:

Therefore, I as the Head of Graduates of University of Malaya would like to advice all our fellow graduates of University of Malaya to combine forces and prepare ourselves together with all the necessary knowledge and preparation before we continue our fight in the actual battle field. This advice implies mainly to our Malay Graduates. We must treasure the sacrifices made by our ancestors which tried so hard to ensure that Tanah Melayu ( Malay Land ) is free from the intrusion of alien races. We must not fall into the category of those who forgets their roots
until they will be taken over by other races. Graduates must prove themselves that we are capable and the best choice to take over the throne of governing the country in the future. This implies with the theme of MPMUM Progressive, Dynamic, Professional. There is nothing more important that can compared to our always-sensitive and improving Graduates. I also would like to advice all Malay Graduates to prepare ourselves in facing all sorts of unpredicted challenges that may occur in near future, relating to the rise of our fellow citizens, in particular to the non-Malay races. Don't let ourselves slack and allow our "enemies under the blankets to attack us" (direct translation from the Malay idiom). Don't allow our Malaysia to fall into the hands of those who are irrelevant.

HERE'S MY SPEECH TO MALAY/MUSLIM/MALAYSIAN STUDENTS:

Students, Challenge Yourselves to Greater Heights!
by Azly Rahman

An introduction to a speech on "student idealism" delivered at the annual gathering of the Malaysian and Indonesian Muslim students in Washington D.C., USA., December 2007. (PART 1)

Assalamualikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.

Peace and Blessings to all of you. May Allah Bless our gathering and grant us wisdom and serenity amidst this increasingly chaotic world in which the powerful amongst us continue to trample over the powerless. May we see this trend reversed, in our lifetime.

I thank you for inviting me to me speak on something which makes me feel twenty years younger – on "student idealism", on what is it, and what to do with it. I love the word "idealism". It brings us right to what the Greek philosopher Plato said about the difference between "forms" and "appearance". Of what the Hindus say about "Maya" and the troubled "yuga" in which Prince Rama would come back to bring salvation. A world in which the "rapper" and the "hip hopper" would say "for real…my dude?"

Twenty year ago, when I was very young, when I was president of the Malaysian Student Association and then of the Southeast Asian Student Association in an American university in the Midwest, friends and I used to explore issues of what to do when we have ideals. Countless hours of dialogue amongst friends of all races and nationalities, coupled with our obsession with the topic of the impeding collapse of the dreaded apartheid system in South Africa and the subsequent release of Nelson Mandela – hundred of hours of these -- yielded in us some sense of idealism. We studied the secret mission, logic, and innerworkings of the American multinational corporations in propping up dictators around the world.

We studied what President Dwight D. Eisenhower called the "military-industrial complex". We were passionate about all these, blending what we learned in the classroom – knowledge gained from professors of the anti-Vietnam war era – with what we can possible do as "citizens of the world" imbued with the idea of universal human rights. The Internet and the World Wide Web was beginning to take shape. As you know, both were developed out of womb of the US Military – under a project called DARPA-NET. The Internet began with 5 computers talking to each others, sharing military intelligence. That was the consequence of the evolution of Cybernetics Theory.

We read philosophy, politics, race theory, and radical sociology – to get a better grasp of what we mean by being a committed student of idealism. With two good friends of mine – one Chinese and one Indian, one a student of Engineering and the other of Philosophy and Psychology -- we would have our summer midnight strolls along the man-made river across our campus – talking about issues and possible resolutions. Never had we thought that Malaysian politics would have gotten worse.

We spoke up against racial discrimination, corruption, the increasing gap between the rich and the poor. We spoke for equal opportunity and the respect for all cultures. We questioned almost everything, true to the meaning of academic freedom we were trained in.

We were in America. We had the freedom to do that – speak at forums where Malaysian officials visit to speak of this or that program the government is doing. I remember on one occasion when Datuk Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was visiting the campus as Education Minister, we had to announce our name and our Identity Card (IC) number in public if we wanted to ask questions. That was way before Malaysian students all over the world had to sign the Surat Akujanji and be in an oath-taking ceremony to pledge loyalty to whoever the leader is and however he/she conducts himself or herself as a leader. Signing it, like many of us are beginning to experience, will take away your rights to seek outside help in case your fundamental rights as a citizen, under Article 10 is violated, as in the case of the student in UPM whose laptop was taken away. He was not allowed to seek the help of a lawyer.

Have things changed these days? Especially in our public universities back home? Your guess is as good as mine. Your analyses too might be better than mine, since you are in contact with friends back home.

How privileged you are to be able to sit in classrooms in your Liberal Arts and Social Science classes at Rutgers, Syracuse, Stevens, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, etc. wherein your professor will never call in the Special Branch or the FBI or the SWAT team or the Ninja Turtles everytime he/she hears someone badmouthing President George Bush or any of the members of his family, or his dogs.

America has its major flaws but democracy is constantly reinterpreted. We might even have the first woman president or even better, the first African American president from an Opposition party. This is something we can also look forward to in Malaysia – the radical changing of paradigms without much damage done to our national psyche. People here do not panic when there is a possible or imminent change in government. They just continue living and they cheer when a politician gets jailed for corruption and abuse of power. As long as the economy's fine, as long as the streets are safe, and they have a job, things move on.

This is the essence of American pragmatism one can learn from. As a nation being colonized by the British and as one which is founded upon the principles of a republic, Americans speak up for universal human rights as well. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere, as many Americans now believe. Democracy here is a "lived experience" permeating even in the lives of young children in the classroom in which children are encouraged to speak up, ask questions, or even disagree with the teachers.

As students we must understand not only how fragile the world has always been but how changes happen across time and space. We are seeing exciting changes happening in Malaysia. No longer are people keeping silent -- after 22 years of being silenced. The old regime is slowly crumbling, being deconstructed, making way for a newer world order in an age wherein change and complexity is the norm. Wealth and power are merely ephemeral constructs and very fragile these days. What happened to Marcos, Thaksin, the Shah of Iran, Suharto, or even John Howard of Australia can happen anywhere in the Asian state. Money and Machiavelli can't but happiness or political stability. Ethics and spirituality can do a better job.

Never take stability for granted, nor geographical boundaries as constant. What happened to Singapore in 1965 can happen to Kelantan, Kedah, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, or even to the tiny kingdom of Perlis in 2025. We must be ready to manage change and perhaps direct its energy to our heart's desire, with Fate conspiring.

In this postmodern world, anything is possible – boundaries shifting, the wealthy and the powerful hunted down for corruption and finally jailed for life, campuses and classrooms becoming an arena for free-flowing exchange of ideas however radical and ridiculous these ideas may be. We might even see all forms of university programs that teach racism through indoctrination and singing outdated propaganda songs about a child playing with fire, banned.

We might even see politically-appointed educational leaders removed and replaced by those interested in freeing our universities. We might even see students of all races sit together during lunch breaks and at dinner tables, talking about how to feed the poor of all races and how best to build a future postmodern republic that is founded upon peace, anti-elitism, virtue, social justice, and deeply meaningful inter-cultural understanding.

I am a dreamer -- after seeing many nightmares in broad daylight.

It seems that we are living in two worlds – one that allows us to speak out our mind in this forum and not get hunted down, and one that makes us afraid to even think of how to express our idealism. This is the world of America on the one hand, and hypermodern-Malaya on the other. I call it Malaya because we are still a colony – colonized by ourselves and the structures we have allowed to be installed and become institutions and ultimately institutionalized and alienate us. Malaysia declared its Independence fifty years ago – but it remains a state that merely declared its Independence. Some say that we are evolving into a 'police state". It is up to you to characterize what this means.

In relation to all these then, what is an ideal Muslim student and the nature of idealism he/she embodies? How must he/she function in a world that demands not only racial and religious tolerance but a synthesis of ideas foundationed upon idealism whose flame that will not be allowed die? How do we train ourselves to become what I call radical, world wise thinkers who must think like a social futurist?

We shall explore this further. At the end of this talk I am interested in how you come up with more radical questions than the responses to the propositions I made.

UNITED AGAINST RACISM should be the slogan of all public universities

If only the Americans were to think like that, they would have chased out every single Malaysian student who tried to enter their LAND to EDUCATE themselves! They would have been a single-race country without any thinking capacity.

Some of the biggest genius behind the economy in USA are Germans, Japanese, Koreans, Chinese and even Indians.

The logic of keeping to one race just goes to proof that University Malaya's eduction system was NOT enough to bring the 'katak bawah tempurung' out of his/her coconut shell and I pray, they stay there for the rest of their life!

Disturbing declaration by the Malay students of UM. I do not blame them. They are the product of our Mr.TDM's 22 years rule and under Mr.AAB's claim of " I am the Prime Minister for all" seems more like NATO ( No Action Talk Only). Ask yourself, what/where are the serious efforts of the present UMNO led Malaysian Government towards national unity apart from telling you from young that you are Malay/Non malay, Muslim/Non muslim, Bumiputra/Non bumiputra, segregating us into groups.
Thank you Mr.TDM for your 22 years of separating us apart. Thank you Mr.AAB for continue to talk only but no action. Time for change.

Our education system has totally fail both academically and morally. If what is written by the head of graduates is true, what future we have in this land?

But again we may say this is just a young fellow who want to be popular using the cheap and fast way of getting there, bu will he be totally blame while our former PM Dr. M despite many years as PM once retired he also occasionally say and comment sometime along the racist line. The young is learning too and may pick up from what the veteran has to say. What a pity.

After saying that at time we should not lost hope as we still have people who is visionary like our Dr.Azly Rahman

I think these students are off the plot! What is this Ketuanan Melayu over and over again. Please don't forget it was all Malaysian that built Malaysia to what it is today. One race alone in this country cannot do it. After 50 years its time to share the cake equally with all races. All non Malays realizes that they need to stand up for their rights as stated in the Federal Constitution . Time to level the playing field so that all Malaysian are given what they rightly deserve.

By the way, please note that Malays like all other races in Malaysia are not the real Bumi of this land. The orang asli, dayaks, kadazan, etc are the real bumis. So Malays are actually alien too just like us Chinese and Indians.

Can anyone confirm if Hang Tuah was actually Chinese? That would also prove that one of the earliest most popular settlers in Malaysia is Chinese. At the end of the day, working and living together in harmony is what we want but with equal distribution of wealth, power and position.

Dr Azly,

This is shocking indeed. Education is supposed to broaden the mind, especially at the tertiary level. To know that a significant portion of the graduates emerging from local institutions have this closed-off mindset is extremely upsetting. It is an indictment of our universities - and completely vindicates my decision not to send any of my children to any local university. This certainly limits our options severely but I refuse to allow my children into environments that would categorise them as "tuan" or "pendatang", "top dog" or "irrelevant" based solely on the colour of their skin.

I would also like to know who this head of graduates is. Is he a faculty member or a student? We should name and shame.

He could be a product of BTN,a staunch follower of Hishamuddin, and a crazy follower of Dr. M.
It is sad to note that our university has turned into an institute of babarious institute under UMNO government.
Our country is heading towards destruction if it is to be continued the government of UMNO, which is full of corruption, arrogance and racism .
The only remedy is to change the government!

Dear Sir,

Why blame these students? They are a product of their parents, teachers, uncles, aunties, universities, schools, mentors, imams, religious educators, politicians, etc. etc.

They have been brainwashed into believing this from birth. Unfortunately it is the same type of people who profess a strong faith. Again hypocracy.

What an awe inspiring speech from a Taliban inspired fresh graduate. Companies who intend to employ such UM graduates must think carefully before they get themselves into trouble. I've seen people with such attitude in my previous employment in a public listed company. Employing them is easy but getting rid of them is near impossible because Umno also got involved in the company's domestic inquiries. When political threat is used, there's nothing much you can do except to swallow your pride and put the troublemakers back to their jobs even if their performance stinks. Such ungrateful Taliban inspired shitheads think that the money for their education comes from Umno only. How I wish it is true because our hard-earned taxes can go to more deserved Malaysians. Thank you Dr.Azly for restoring some of our faith in majority of our young Malaysians.

This is the end result of having Article 153.

Not only has this article to be abolished but Malaysian history has to be rewritten to reflect the true story, to stop the malays from being deluded! Their delusions are dangerous and sure to invite the intervention of foreign nations! History repeating itself since the times of the Portugese.

I was in MACRO (before Tesco took over) when I noticed a young boy playing at the entrance. "Adik, nanti orang masok, besi ini akan berpusing. Terkena nanti." He ignored me and sure enough someone entered and the boy's head was knocked. He looked at me and said, "Babi Cina." I said, "saya bukan Cina adik dan Cina bukan Babi." His father looked at me. So how do you compete against a racist ?
(if you don't compete, you are going to lose - the former premier taught us that lesson well)

Lets hear suggestions from the public.

Here is my 2cents - make it costly/expensive to be a racist :
- start denying the racist employment, opportunities, advancements in the workforce
- expose the illegitimate behaviors of racist
- refuse to buy products and services from racists (qualify your suppliers)
- refuse to sell your products and services to racists (qualify your customer)
- shun / exclude racists at social engagement

Dear Azly,

Thanks for your excellent posting . This is how we all as Malaysians, if we want to see a future built on trust and sharing that can propel us to stand out globaly should adopt these guidelines . It is very distrubing to see how some of these Malay students can come out with such negative ideology . Am sure their teachers/school had a part to play here . Being young with lack of exposure to the real world, they can be easily influenced especially in the presence of their seniors who are also racialist themselves. Steps must be taken immediately to change their mind set as otherwise things could be out of control later on. It is indeed shocking. We dont need another `Taliban` here in Malaysia !

To describe non-bumis as aliens reminds me of the alien movie chronology (part 1 to 4?) or the alien vs predator AVP series. Maybe if the keris is bath in aliens blood it will just melt away because the blood is acidic in nature. But in reality, if a bumi goes to the hospital for a life saving operation the chances of getting an alien type blood in a blood transfusion is roughly 35%. Hopefully the blood is not acidic otherwise it is just going to hurt so bad....You get my point?

It's always a mental challenge to grasp why they see shadows and enemies in every nooks and corners. What happens after you have shoveled all the 'aliens' out of the country? You can bet your last songkok they will turn on their own. My Islam 'Hadhari' is much holier than your Islam 'Harakiri' will be the start of another internal holy-war. As the powerful nations watch the glory of self-culling from the sideline, they will eventually come in with their IMF to bail you out. Needless to say, it comes will a large string attached. Petronas will of course be called Exxon Mobil-Pet. An acknowledgment for the oil we have and the commitment by the country to repay the loan.

By that time, our Malay Graduates might have lost their appetite for ethnic cleansing. "Those whiteman and their Israeli brothers are to smart and too powerful for us lah. Fight them sure lose one. Relaxx lah bro. We think 'ketuanan putih' rocks, and their Starbuck is cool !!!"

OMG!!!!

No wonder those who are graduated locally are so "lack of skill", i think they are only good in this.. No wonder our universities are falling down the slippery slope.. no wonder we are so uncompetitive in the world market..No wonder we lose to Singapore.. we can only be proud when compare to some african countries...

Dear Head of Graduates, UM,
Your advice that 'we must not fall into the category of those who forgets their roots until they will be taken over by other races'is a fair remark. Now, here is what you should do to show your 'followers'that you are a MAN - walk your talk. Any one of the following challenges would be proof that you are a MAN.
1. become the richest man in Malaysia in the next 10 years, or
2. become the Prime Minister of Malaysia in the next 15 years, or
3. win the Nobel Prize
Make one of the above your goal in life, and show the world you are not a WOMEN.
Goodluck.

Dr. Azly Rahman,

It is a letter we have seen before (6-8 weeks back?) in MT and was heavily criticised by many (me included). There were even accusations by commentators here accusing the person implicated as an Indon project IC beneficiary based from his name. The person implicated denied making such a letter. Though the issue of Ketuanan this or that is ongoing, I have considered this particular letter incident closed as there's nothing more should be made out of it.

Do go on with educating Malaysians on evils of racism. United against racism!

If that is the piece by the "Head of Graduates of University of Malaya", it show up how low the university has become.

Where are we heading as a nation? Can the govt see the flaw that is happening? The student leaders must rise against chauvinist like that "Head of Graduates of University of Malaya".

He should be charged under the ISA. He is going to destro a whole generation of Malaysians. If I am a parent, I will take up the matter with the relevant ministry.

Shame, shame, shame. Show us his pic and we will chase this scum out of Malaysia, let him leave among the monkeys in the Penang Botanical garden.

Racists will always exist in society.
(its the cowards way to compete against other peoples)

(let's encourage them to express their racism in public - its their right, and we have to take the good with the bad).

Why do our resident racists have to hide ?

I work in one of the largest school district in Canada and we spend a fair bit of time in our social studies classes talking about human rights. Can Malaysia do the same? - I think not. Everybody living here acknowledges that Canada is a land of immigrants and nobody threatens nobody. Should there be an incident on racism, the public (all races and religion) would march out in the streets with banners with slogans like "ERACISM" - erase racism. Last year the Canadian OM Steven harper apologised for the misdeed done to the Chinese in the 1900s (the previous government imposed head tax on Chinese immigrants) and then last month, he apologized to the native of the land, again, for the misdeeds of the previous government. What a great country I live and work in. No wonder Canada has been voted many times the best country to live in. Malaysia will continue its downhill journey if the young, rotting brains are not arrested quickly enough and be given remedial education.

For God to save and bless Malaysia, firstly, He'll probably want to see university students united and marching out with banners shouting ERACISM! DIVERSITY! PEACE and GOODWLL! Picture this scenario, if the other races were to leave Malaysia and the Malay race was the only one remaining, I guarantee there would be a caste system among them too - the elite UMNO Malays, the very poor kampong Malays, the struggling middle class Malays who now try to immigrate but lack English proficiency and life skills all because of years of handing out from the government. My dear Malay brothers and sisters, wake up to reality and start to take care of yourselves and generations to come. God has created each and every one of us IN HIS IMAGE - and that is LOVE! because God is LOve.

Good God, this must have been the work of BTN which has done a very good job indeed to promote racism amongst the Malays. Is this what our Universities are churning out from their universities? If so, the future looks bleak for Malaysia. Are these the graduates who will be our future leaders? May God help us, and help our country.

Hey, what happened to Islam, where the Islamists are so proud of. Does Islam preach racism, ketuanan, discrimination? Doesn't Islam preach love, understanding, tolerance, live and let live, help others when help is needed, without discrimination, like in other religions? Can any of the Malay graduates and future leaders please answer these questions?

Let me add that these fanatic graduates can only find jobs in Government service. The government will gladly expand the workforce to accommodate these graduates, otherwise how can BTN carry on with this sort of propaganda? You can't convince anyone whose stomach is empty.

These graduates will not make it in any private companies, no way. They will be like fishes out of water. They need to be spoonfed, as their brains have been brainwashed by UMNO to think only as UMNO wants them to think.

Nagivator,,,

I am for sure that this guy went into the Uni with half of the grade than many non-malays who did not make it inside!

He is feeling threaten....for sure, one reason maybe that he was underqualified to enter the university in the first place...and there are many non-Malays who are better educated and more fluent in local languages plus English eventhough they may have not entered the Uni.

Another thing ...Malaysian Universities are badly ranked internationally...so it is obvious that this "learned" guy would not be get a job elsewhere besides Malaysia.

I am proud to be a non-Malay ...learnt to live and pull through life without the golden spoon!

That 600 million is only for running a sandiwara. UMNO has no intention of uniting the races. UMNO knows this very well. After all, what do you think the BTN is doing? Not for unity, as we now know. As I wrote above earlier, why is it that the Minister of National Unity is always a non-Malay? It's because unity is the least on the minds of the UMNO leaders. But they have to put a bumiputera as the Minister who is not the first class bumiputera, but the second class bumiputera, to give this ministry some sort of credibility.

And the second class bumiputera thinks he is running a very important Ministry! Wake up, man. UMNO is sniggering and laughing at you, lah

Hey... how about a far more balance perspective. Don't just squarely blame the students. They are just the reflections of the chauvinist lecturers.

You have’nt met these chauvinist lecturers yet; they far even worst.
