We must be aware of the changes happening politically and culturally. Because I proposed changes the way we view MRSM, many are quite upset without really understanding what I am proposing. Amuk and latah are the reaction to my proposals. It is good I believe to radically change the way MRSM is run and to redefine "success" so that it will not continue to be successful yet failing.
Many in ANSARA and in this forum are "too Malay" in their thinking and being so for the wrong reason. Why not allow competition and collaboration in MRSM system by rigorously recruiting applicants so that the composition will be 50 percent Bumiputra and 50 percent non-Bumiputra by whatever definition of these false racial/ethnic categorization MARA is using?
Why not let meritocracy rule the educational airwaves. MRSM is well funded to redefine itself and to show that country what 1Malaysia actually means, although I prefer the idea of Malaysian Malaysia better. MRSM has been and is still rooted in ultra-Malayness and the innovations in teaching and learning over the decades are good from a curricular reform point of view but not in promoting a culture of diversity.
Many times, reflecting upon my almost 15 years of involvement with the MRSM system, as as student, and educator, and later as a researcher-consultant I think not only of possibilities of cultural understanding through such restructuring but also about the racial composition of MRSM faculty.
Not only that the system is too Malay-centric and unhealthy for the child's development in a multiculturally-demanding world, but it also breeds the excesses of Malay pseudo-authoritarianism. It breeds the culture of totalitarianism in schools. deBono's CORT thinking skills help develop creativity superficially but do not teach children to mingle cross-culturally simply because the school system is too Malay-centric. Renzulli's Triad model is good for the Gifted and Talented Enrichment model but does it develop cross-cultural competency when almost 100 percent are Malays themselves struggling for control right there in the confines of the boarding school?
True MRSM has produced successful people, a few of them illustriously successful, but what is the meaning of success of a nation when the supposedly creme de la creme and handpicked Malay kids are going to be groomed and showcased as more sophististicated ultra-Malay who are actually persona anathema to the trumpeted slogan of 1Malaysia?
Forget about the campaign of "One School Fits All" (Satu Sekolah Untuk Semua) when this very system of social engineering for national development called MRSM that is supposed to create "a breed of human beings different from government-owned boarding schools" cannot even get its philosophy of education right and trapped in the contradictions of educational reform.
The One School Fits All proposal could well turn out to be yet another totalitarian design that will make it easier to control the young Malay minds; minds that ought not to be shackled by any political forces out to turn those children into beings happy to reproduce the style of racism and the genre of racial insensitivity of their fathers and mothers.
These are my initial thoughts on ANSARA's response to my article. I welcome reasoned arguments and an engaging dialogue framed intellectually.

What is so "great" about national that use monolithic Malay language and wipe up other mother tongue language in school teaching?
Malay language are not superior, no in scientific medium,nor in mathematic, economic, even lose out in literature. In addition, Malay language also lost the DYNAMIC of growth,compare to Bahasa Indonesia.
Can Malaysia Malay interact with the 200 million population Indonesia ? No. It is just Malaysia ruling Malay day dream. Bahasa Indonesia already extent the boundary of Malay language beyond Malaysia knowledge. Only those Malaysia Malay that keep up the growth of the language able to follow it. Forcing Chinese, Indian,Iban,Kadazan ,etc to abandon their mother tongue language and join in learning will NEVER strengthen Malay. Because the problem is not cause by other culture, it is because of stagnant Malay culture.

I was an MRSM student in 1997-1998. Contrary to Dr Azly claims that MRSM breeds ultra-malay, I don't see why MRSM couldnt be opened to other races.
MRSM initially for gifted Malay kids to study in well-funded boarding school. it emphasized giving the underprivileged kids chance to excel. but nowadays, i saw most of these students are from rich families.
so what am i saying is; its ok for the MRSM to practice meritocracy since they are not really helping poor malay kids anymore. open their door to all malaysians. malays shouldnt be cocooned within themselves as this would nurture ill thoughts/ misconceptions about others

I hope all Human Rights NGOs I hope all Human Rights NGOs or goodly political parties will be able to get those laws tabled soon, there is little time and I would even say that the 2012 'End of World' scenario specifically refers to end of mental autonomy. The inception of your proposal is jazzy . It is an observational judgement on the move for Malaysia to betterment but successful failing .

We are learning to be more aware with our environment . The problem is , all the interested political parties are trying to indoctrinate us . All educational institutions should be opened to all Malaysians irrespective of race or religion.
And what Dr. Azly has proposed should be the basis of creating a One Malaysia Race. It is education that creates unity if it is used correctly.
Wrongly, it will create an elite that will be out of touched with reality. Concerned more with protecting the interests of the Malay race.
This philosophy runs counter to Najib's policy of wanting to unite the country.
Just imagine, on the one hand, UMNO wants unity in diversity and on the other, it wants to have Ketuanan Melayu and not Ketuanan Rakyat.
By saying and practising the principle of Malay first, it indicates that the UMNO Malays are therefore not Malaysians.
Whereas, all the other races in Malaysia consider themselves as Malaysians.
By implication, UMNO Malays has no right to be a part of the Malaysian Government because they are Malay and not Malaysians.
So the position of Najib, Muhyiddin and all the UMNO ministers in the cabinet are illegal because they are not Malaysians.
It is therefore clear, why Najib and his predecessors, Badawi and Mahathir cannot formulate a policy that will create freedom, unity and equality which will bring benefit to all the races because they think Malay and not Malaysian.
As Dr. Azly rightly mentioned, education is an instrument that can unite people of various races in a country. It can also be a means of creating disunity if it is used to propagate the interest and superiority of one particular race only.
Malaysia must learnt from the experience of Tunisia and Egypt that elitism does not pay but freedom, justice and equality does.

You do realize that malays can enroll their children in chinese schools freely? I have few of my cousins who were enrolled in Chinese schools. Can you say the same thing about MRSM? Malaysia is probably among the few countries in the world where the majority race needs crutches to survive. Can you imagine an all white or all black state universities in the US? In Malaysia it's possible. Sometimes I wonder what is it that the malays are afraid of? How long are the malays going to play weaklings? My cousins who are in chinese schools right now are doing extremely well on their own.

First and foremost,i found your photo is funny and i believe your comment/post on MRSM its a bit confusing and filled with hidden agenda.
Before that, the numbers stated doesn’t make sense at all.... as the total figures just don’t add up. Besides, it’s a little bit incoherent with the rest of items...and the MRSM part being bold seems a little bit fishy..(in the context if the numbers really from the right
source or ever exist).
From my experience as an ANSARA, all matters abt MRSM will be handled by MARA BPM
Division (Bahagian Pendidikan Menengah), which will report to the
Timb Ketua Pengarah Pendidikan Mara, where all matters with regards from syllabus, penempatan to financial matters will behandled solely by MARA not by MOE.(IM CHALLENGING YOUR SOURCE!)
That's the reason why, if you notice when PMR or SPM results
being published, MRSM will never be announced as the best school in
the country (although in actual fact MRSM results have proven from time to time are much better), as the announcement by the Ministry of Education will only cover sekolah kerajaan.
I still remember in 90’s where there was a time MARA tak ada duit (and Utusan Malaysia really made a fuss about it), our meal quality at Dewan makan also has been slashed....
My point, i don’t think there is a genuine published consolidated
report ever existed, that will cover all financial matters about the country education systems, where in fact these schools (kerajaan vs MRSM) are separated and report to different Ministries. Nevertheless, if im not mistaken... MRSM, or MARA Junior Science College is a groups of boarding schools created by the People's Trust Council (Majlis Amanah Rakyat, commonly abbreviated as MARA), a Malaysian government agency (err...focus on Malay) to help provide better learning facilities for bright students in local schools throughout Malaysia.
The “initial or earlier” target was to benefit mostly bright & miskin
students especially from the rural areas in Malaysia. The first and
second MRSM established were MRSM Seremban (now Kolej Mara), and MRSM
Pengkalan Chepa, Kelantan in 1973.
Just to share, the main reason why MRSM is using GPA and CGPA concept
in their grading, and the form 5 students being exposed with and need to come out with research
and thesis.. were because initially the existence of MRSM is to create
the Malay elite that are “not typical SBP kind of nature”. We were(MRSM students) always been told by our former cikgu, with the likes of long existed SBP such as MCKK or VI in fact,... were more to
British kind of systems, the forefathers of MRSM have adopted the American style in order to create a different kind of education systems. The objective is to balance out the culture of enriching the good and complete Malay...between the Brits and American mold in Malaysia.
I still strongly believe, MRSM "has" contributed a lot to the Malays and Malaysian in overall. You may want to check the ANSARA list and you may be surprised, there are MRSM graduates that have help to shape this country and for you to be able to use the internet and blog about this.
The existance of MRSM is not for the sake of to separate or to unequal the systems, but to give
opportunity for people that are bright, but unfortunate.
