Malaysia's politics of color

We have red trucks heading north, men in black heading to jail, yellow wave heading in all direction, and blue ocean strategy heading nowhere ...

Semiotics of color, political-economy of class, psychology of control we all are seeing..

God Bless our country -- right or wrong. Wage peace -- not war.

Dear Cik Azly,

To-day is Thursday, 7 May, 2009, 8.59am in KL reading your posting on "Are we seeing a failed Malaysia?" I am one of the victims in the May 13 1969 incident. My sister is turning 40th on June 15th 2009. My mom was carrying her in her last trimester. She was hidden in the well by my dad to save mother and child. At the same time, my niece who was 2 months old was in KL with her parents and 3 siblings to stay with my family in Dato Kramat. She was crying non-stop and my dad was about to commit murder by strangling her to save 8 households totalling 35 human beings. Luckily soldiers came to escort them to safer place. My dad lost his fortune and a broken-hearted man who until now (84 years old)talked of his glories in KL. He has migrated to LA. He didn't want to leave Malaysia. The leaders massacred us; forced us out of our country. It is no difference to the 'Hilter' period, killed the Jews. We still feel the prosecution.

To cut the unforgotten human story short, my family lost their home and became refugees at Merdeka stadium. I was in London studying and never allowed any news of my family members from the Malaysian Embassy; no telephone communication allowed. This was in 1969. My parents never wanted any of us to return to Malaysia to spare us of such pain because of race-based politics. We are still the victims of this race-based politics in 2009. Because of this, our status changed to poverty. I grew up very quickly to realise my race as a Chinese, born and educated in Malaysia until Form 5 was a reject in my own country.

Yet, my stay in London for the past 8 years to earn a living, I didn't get any racial prejudice. I was employed based on my knownledge and skills. I was given equal opportunity employment. My husband got a job in HK because he was able to speak BM, Chinese and English. He was employed by the offshore company of the Indonesian Oil Company, Pertamina! To me my husband was chosen because of its multi-lingual advantages. We both didn't experience any racial issues as Malaysian Chinese although we were teased for our adulerated 'cantonese' dialect.

Then we moved on to Australia to continue with our employment. No racial issues although rumoured that Australia practises its 'white men' policy!! We were given equal opportunity employment and given the same respect.

My husband and I are both in our early sixties now. Our heart is still in Malaysia and we returned to KL in 2003. We were shocked to experience the racial prejudice given to us because we have Chinese names in spite of the fact that we are still Malaysian with our ID and Malaysian passports together with our citizenships. Where do we stand?

I share your feeling waiting for the right opportunity to return to your roots. You will have better treatment because of your name. It is good for you to come 'home' to experience Malaysia in its inequality and inequity when you are so exposed to equality and equity of mankind in an open society such as America.

In spite of so many years living in KL now as a matured adult with global exposure and experience, I am struggling to understand the mindset of the leaders who are bringing Malaysia to a halt. In the meantime, the leaders are enjoying the priviledges, amassing wealth leaving the country with lopsided technology because half of the budget gone into someone's pocket. The final state of the art not accomplished due to lack of money to do planned constructive quality work versus the real operational implementation.

I have worked in Indonesia. Sad to say both countries learn from each other to destroy their human assets. Our leaders claim to improve the human capital ...words are cheap...who is going to change the lipservice growth.

the hindsight of your wish to return to Malaysia especially in the educational arena; sad to say you are working against many upstream systems; "David and Goliath" .

today we are in the 21st Century, the Malaysian Ministry of Education is still debating whether English should be continued as the medium of instruction for Science and Maths!!! The leaders responsible in the policy and decision-making are so cute! And the irony is children of these leaders are sent abroad to gain the best education while the underserved children are waiting for their destiny in getting the best education under the clonies who claimed to have the expertise in steering the country's education to its optimal performance!!
