URGENT MESSAGE: Malaysians must master the English language

Although Bahasa Melayu is enshrined in the Constitution as the official language and there is a protest going on against the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English, we must not send the wrong message that the lingua franca is to be shunned.

Malaysians must master the English language and being competent in it should not be a problem -- the language is everywhere. Too much emotions is being stirred to rally the masses against this language of egalitarianism.

Sending the wrong message to the kampong kids will mean that they and their teachers will never see the importance of English.

Come back to our senses. Why not improve the teaching of English in all schools instead. Even in our local universities, college students are not yet proficient in the language enough to get them through interviews.

It is sad that the whole issue is misunderstood. The people who are protesting to restore the teaching of Science and Maths in Bahasa Melayu are never against the English Language. They are in fact urging the Government to increase the contact hours for the teaching of the English Language subject. How can students increase their proficiency in the English language when the number of contact hours for the subject remains the same. This group of people acknowledge the importance of English. They have never called for the abolishment of the English language subject. Why is it so difficult for the Government to accept this argument?

The only thing that they did not agree to is to the teaching of both subjects in English. How do you expect the students to understand Science and Maths, if they can't understand what is being taught because it is taught in English. Let us not add to the confusion further. Let us not be blinded by the misconstruction of reality of the Malaysian mainstream media.

i can understand people not grasping english in the era prior to the Internet age. Nowadays there is no excuse not to understand or use english. Its everywhere. One just need to have the will to learn. If you dont understand english, youre just too lazy to learn and youre irresponsible. With internet, cable tv, etc students should even know how to pronounce the words properly. Malu muka aku tengok menteri cakap english beterabog. Sedih. i'm slowly learning french not by attending classes but by buying a basic book and also switching My DVD movies to have french subtitles, and they have features where the movie is dubbed in french too. Its the same way i learnt english during teh VHS years. So much so that the english that brits speak sounds alien to me. I love the modern age. Its a good era to live in. Knowledge is at your fingertips.

There are 3 types of Malay in M'sia.
1) yang tinggal di awang-awangan, lost touched of the grassroots problems. The 'elite'
2) yang di atas tembok. The 'oblivion'
3) The Malay nationalists n the grassroots.
The problem is not language...its about Malay's socio economic position (2 & 3) and the threats of assimilation of Malays culture, heritage, traditions.
