Yoga and yogis -- history and nature

Yesterday, I was privileged to attend a session of Sri Maha Yogam. There, I learned something I was not aware of before - the Islamic prayer ritual involves a number of specific movements that stimulate the circulation and contribute to improved physical health.

It would not be wrong to call this prayer ritual a form of yoga. And to describe it as such should not diminish it one bit nor be deemed insulting in any way.

That's what you and broad-minded people might say, Singam!

But JAIS and the Fatwa Council, now there's a different kind of beast you have not reckoned with!

Buat ke, tak buat ke Ketuk Ketampi nya pagi pagi, darah tok nya berjalan jugak dalam uratnya selagi nadinya tu bedenyut

Yang telapak tangan kanan tampar ketiak kiri, telapak tangan kiri tampar ketiak kanan sampai 1OOOX macham yang Abdullah Munshi tenguk Sepoi Benggali buat tepi Pantai kala depa diupah pi serang Tanah Jawa 1811 zaman Raffles mengampu Lord Minto tu (cara berdoanya sebelum memulakan makan tu) kiranya yoga juga ke?

I dont agree that a religios body should dictate society on how people must live their lives. Religion is a guidance for humankind. If one is a practising muslim, he should know that his daily 5x prayers are already a sufficient form of yoga like exercise. The physical act is secondary to ones spiritual submission to God. Prostration is an act of bowing before God, not a Yogi. This has been done since the time of Abraham,Moses Jesus until Muhammad.

A yoga type of exercise derives results depending on the state of mind of the person doing the exercise. The exercise in itself, even ketuk ketampi, merely stimulates energy flow.

If one is focused on the Supreme Being while performing the exercise, the energy flow stimulates spiritual awakening. Submission to the Supreme brings bliss and peace of mind.
