Focus on Trengganu: Another 'oil' debate would be good., but debate wisely...

I enjoyed the debate below. I think it was healthy and gets the nation to think and make intelligent choices on the kind of leadership Malaysia deserves. I was interested in the cognitive processes -- individual and group -- involved. A phenomenologist would be interested in the question of "how" each party prepares for the debate and what strategies were used to show the public what ought to be the "winning image" in Malaysia's game of perception. Trengganu needs a nationally-televised debate on the issue of oil royalty. Body language, intonation, rhetoric, camera-friendliness, and of course diplomacy and a skilled play of the logical, linguistic, and interpersonal "intelligences" - all these become the repertoire of debates. Rhetorical and oratorical skills are key in debates.

In my early years of teaching I used to coach debate teams, groom speakers, and teach public speaking and as a student of rhetorics and oratory, I would deconstruct the process in a debate.

In Kuala Trenganu, I hope the candidates will debate on the future of Trengganu vis-a-viz issues such as royalty from oil and the ideology of developmentalism.

The three parts (out of 8) of the Anwar Ibrahim -- Shabery Cheek debate can be a good data for analysis on the phenomenological aspect of the debate mentioned.
